Retirement properties in Berkshire
Berkshire might be on London’s doorstep, but with its wealth of beautiful gardens and countryside this county provides the perfect antidote to city life.
It also has strong connections to the Royal family. Here you find Windsor Castle, Ascot Racecourse and Savill Garden, as well as a host of pretty villages and charming hostelries nestled amid the leafy country lanes.
One of Berkshire's largest towns, Newbury, is set along the banks of the River Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal. Despite its rural feel, Newbury is brimming with great shopping facilities, and there are also plenty of lively cafes and restaurants in the town centre, while the Corn Exchange arts centre provides a wide variety of entertainment including a large cinema.
The surrounding countryside is part of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is also home to one of the country’s finest racecourses. Then there is Reading, with the nationally acclaimed Victorian Forbury Gardens at its heart, leading on to the ruins of the ancient Reading Abbey.
The town is home to the Riverside Museum, and just 10 minutes from its centre you find the Thames where you can spend whole days walking, cruising and exploring the riverbanks.
