There are two main types of retirement developments: retirement living for those aged 55+ and retirement living with extra support (sometimes called Retirement Living Plus or assisted living) for those aged 70+. Each offers an independent lifestyle and onsite communal facilities.

The term retirement property can be a little misleading, as these modern, usually luxurious apartments are not just for the retired. Some residents continue to work whilst living there and most owners agree that moving has enhanced their lifestyle rather than restricted it.

Choosing the right property for you means looking at location, atmosphere and onsite facilities. Most developments have a communal lounge, guest suite, laundry room and landscaped gardens. Extra support developments also usually have an on-site restaurant. Some even boast mobility scooter storage, swimming pool, roof terrace, computer room, library or wellness suite.
