Living in Fleet, Hampshire
Fleet has often been voted as the best place to live in the UK by the Halifax Bank and here are just a few of the reasons why.
There is an endless choice of lovely green open spaces to enjoy. Those within the town including Oakley Park (which was donated to the people of Fleet by James Oakley, a wealthy land owner and business man who owned a shop in Fleet Road that can still be seen today), The Views (which also hosts the annual Food Festival), Fleet Pond with 141 acres of varied habitats, making it the largest fresh water lake in Hampshire, and the Basingstoke Canal.
Getting around Fleet is easy with two bus stops right outside Kings Place that run into town and further afield into local towns of Aldershot and Reading. Fleet Railway Station is just a short walk from the development with trains running into London in just 40 minutes, to Basingstoke in just over 10 minutes and going all the way to Southampton and Bournemouth on the South Coast.
There’s plenty to do around Fleet. A leisurely walk or cycle down the Basingstoke Canal is a nice way to spend an afternoon, just watching the barges go by, or stopping off at one of the many pubs along the way. If you’re sporty, there is North Hants Golf Club and a couple of tennis clubs locally. There are also a lot of things specifically for older people. The Fleet U3A is very active in the area with over 90 different classes. There is a film club, a brand new leisure centre with classes for over 60s, craft clubs and regular shows at The Harlington and other local theatres. There are also several singing groups, the WI and Townswomen Guild, and a few social clubs.
Fleet Road quickly becomes Fleet ‘High Street’ which has retained much of its Victorian and Edwardian architecture. Many of the pubs and shop fronts still maintain many of the original features.
There is a small indoor shopping centre called ‘Hart Shopping Centre’ housing over 20 shops. The town is lucky to be home to many independent shops and boutiques including Sew Busy, Serendipity with Daisy’s Tea Room, Sugarplum Boutique, WC Baker & Sons Est. 1908 and Clarks Butchers. There’s also Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and Marks & Spencer Food. In addition, a small market runs each Saturday in Gurkha Square selling fresh fruit and vegetables, housewares and flowers.
Fleet is also ideally placed for a wide choice of larger shopping centres, including Camberley, Basingstoke, Guildford, Woking and Reading.
The town has a small hospital and two GP surgeries both in walking distance of the development with pharmacies adjoining them.
Fleet has a great community feel with lots of activities going on. During the summer there’s Fleet District Carnival, the Chilli Fiesta, BeerFest and the Food Festival and during the winter there’s the Fleet Christmas Festival where the whole of the high street gets involved!
