Retirement properties in Surrey
One of the Home Counties, Surrey sits in the south-east corner of England. While it might be tantalisingly close to the hustle and bustle of London, this is a county enveloped in glorious countryside dotted with historic towns, picturesque villages and magnificent stately homes.
The county borders Greater London, Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex, Hampshire and Berkshire. The Surrey Hills, to the south-east of Guildford, are designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Surrey, renowned for its gardens and nurseries, is home to the Royal Horticultural Society’s flagship garden at Wisley.
The county has a well-developed transport network, and urban areas provide plenty of busy, pedestrianised shopping opportunities and centres for the arts and cultural interest.
Surprisingly, given how close Surrey is to the capital, it is the UK’s most wooded county, with 22.4 per cent coverage. Box Hill has one of the oldest untouched areas of natural woodland in Europe.
Coulsdon, which straddles south London and Surrey and was a settlement in Anglo-Saxon times, has an interesting and attractive mix of old properties and modern buildings. Coulsdon Common sits at the edge of the oldest part of the town in the North Downs Natural Area. Virtually all of its 127 acres are part of a Site of Nature Conservation Importance, largely for its chalk grassland and wood pasture habitats.
