Stuck for something to do with the grandchildren over half term? If the weather’s poor, why not get them in the kitchen making some healthy snacks? Here are 5 healthy snack ideas that would look great on any kids Halloween party table.
1, Ghost Cookies
Cookies are great fun to make, choose your favourite cookie recipe and use a gingerbread man cutter to cut out the dough to make a ghost shape. Once the cookies are cooled, make up some icing in the usual way and top each cookie with a thin layer. Use cut liquorice or black food colouring gel for the spooky eyes and mouth and enjoy!
2. Satsuma Pumpkins
These look great on the table and are super healthy. Simply peel the satsumas as normal, make a small hole in the top and insert a small slice of cucumber into the top to make the stalk. If you don’t have cucumber, then celery will do.
3. Spooky Bananas
These are super easy to make with kids. Simply peel and chop a banana in half and lay it down on a plate. To make the eyes and mouth you will need a chocolate button for the mouth and two chocolate chips for the eyes.
4. Fruit Kebabs
Fruit kebabs are great fun to make and are great fun to serve as a dessert. They’re also good for getting children to eat more fruit. To make these, you will need wooden skewers, marshmallows, strawberries and kiwis. Peel and cut the kiwis into smaller chunks so they’re about the same size as the marshmallows, then chops the strawberries in half. Next, alternate the fruit as you add them to the skewer. To make the scary faces, use black gel food colouring to draw a ghostly face on the marshmallows.
5. Green Spider or Wiggly Worm Jelly
Jelly is still a winner at any children’s party, so why not add a few spooky friends to the mix? Make the jelly as normal and when it is just about to set, add in some jelly sweets such as worms or spiders. They look great if they are suspended in the jelly with the worms’ head is hanging out over the top! They even look great if the jelly isn’t set and they sink to the bottom.
And for the adults? When they've finished carving out their pumpkins, why not use the leftovers to make a delicious chilli pumpkin soup or try making pumpkin hommous!
